SERVICES
Services I provide
I help organisations and individuals achieve strategic, business and communication goals, by working out what people need to know or do differently, and designing practical ways to build those capabilities.
I’m particularly interested in problems where there isn’t a neat off-the-shelf solution: where an organisation knows what it wants to achieve, but needs help clarifying capabilities and skills gaps, designing training programs and tools, and developing new ways of working that support implementation and long-term impact.
I work on everything from one-off consultancy calls, workshops and facilitated sessions, to longer-term capability projects, research, communications planning and practical skills training for groups and individuals. I also design evaluation programs to help clients check that training has improved workplace performance, and make recommendations for continuous improvement.
Strategy and Capability Consulting
I help organisations work out what they are trying to achieve, what needs to change, and what capabilities, systems or support will help them achieve a strategic business goal. This can include:
Strategy and implementation planning
Capability and training needs assessments aligned to business strategy and goals
Learning strategies, capability frameworks, and operating models
Audience, stakeholder and sector research
Stakeholder engagement and communications planning
Reports, recommendations and practical implementation plans
Short and long-term evaluations to assess training efficacy and impact
Case Studies
Nine Publishing Academy
I designed and established the Nine Publishing Academy - a new in-house capability function for staff across The Sydney Morning Herald, The Age, Australian Financial Review, Brisbane Times, WAtoday and nine.com.au. The set-up for the HR team involved identifying capability gaps, and designing priority learning pilot programs in newsroom leadership, digital production, mobile journalism, AI for multimedia and writing skills. Pilot programs achieved more than 80% positive participant feedback, with longitudinal evaluation showing that participants were applying new skills in the workplace.
University of Wollongong Academy
I was contracted by the University of Wollongong to establish the UOW Academy, a new centralised learning and organisational development function for academic and professional staff. The project involved establishing an operating model and governance framework for HR to manage, designing an enterprise learning framework and creating a strategic roadmap for rollout including stakeholder communications. I also led the design of priority pilot programs in leadership, performance management and AI for researchers.
UNICEF South Asia
I conducted research for Magenta Consulting to support UNICEF South Asia as it transitioned its workplace culture and communications approach from Communication for Development (C4D) to Social and Behaviour Change (SBC). The work included desktop research and stakeholder interviews, to identify the organisational and communications implications of the shift, provide evidence to inform how UNICEF teams could adapt their ways of working and embed the new approach across the region, and identify and address staff learning gaps.
Training design and delivery
I design practical learning that helps people apply new skills and ways of working in their jobs. This can include:
Workshops, short courses and multi-week / multi-month programs
Virtual, face-to-face and blended learning delivery
Online self-directed e-learning programs including MOOCs
University programs
Training-of-trainers
Mentoring and coaching
Toolkits, guides and other practical resources
Evaluation and MERLA to assess workplace impact and support continuous improvement
Case Studies
United Nations / Thomson Reuters Foundation
I designed and delivered training for journalists and civil-society communicators from the world’s 46 Least Developed Countries to help them cover the UN LDC5 Conference in Qatar. The program combined practical conference-reporting skills with digital storytelling and solutions and constructive journalism approaches. I also produced a handbook to support Reuters to train journalists to cover UN conferences in the future, significantly extending the value of the training beyond the program participants.
WAN-IFRA - Indian Newspaper Editors
I designed and delivered an advanced program for senior editors from major Indian news organisations to develop new digital and social-first editorial products. The program combined in-person training in Mumbai with three months of remote mentoring, supporting each participant to move from initial concept to a practical pilot in their own newsroom. This gave participants both the strategic framework and ongoing support needed to test new approaches in a live editorial environment.
Melbourne Business School / 7NEWS
I co-designed and facilitated a three-month hybrid development program for around 100 regional 7NEWS journalists, helping participants shift towards more digital-first reporting and publishing. The program combined live training in audience engagement, responsible AI experimentation, creator-style vertical video, digital-first reporting and media law with asynchronous mentoring. Participants applied the learning directly to their work, with the program supporting them to produce and publish their first digital-first stories.
Facilitation, speaking, and events
I am regularly booked to facilitate discussions, speak and contribute to conferences, and design events that help people understand industry innovation and disruption, and apply new thinking to their work. This can include:
Team and stakeholder consultations
Roundtables and industry workshops
Conference and seminar design
Keynotes and presentations
Panels, and moderated conversations
Case Studies
International Journalism Festival
I have been a regular speaker at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia, presenting on topics including TikTok for audience engagement, and mobile journalism. Most recently, I presented on how solutions journalism can deliver measurable social, editorial and business impact, drawing together practical lessons on audience engagement, newsroom implementation and revenue opportunities.
AI and Trust Editors’ Roundtable
I co-facilitated a University of Technology Sydney roundtable, How can we protect trustworthy news in the age of AI?, for editors from India, the Philippines, West Papua and Indonesia. The session created a structured space for senior journalists to examine the implications of AI for trust, editorial standards and newsroom practice, and to compare emerging challenges and responses across different media markets.
Asia Mobile Journalism Conference
I co-designed the concept, program and speaker line-up for KAS Media Programme Asia’s first Mobile Journalism Conference, bringing together journalists and innovators to explore emerging approaches to mobile and digital storytelling. My role included program design, speaker outreach, session development and facilitation. The inaugural conference in Bangkok sold out. A second, online edition attracted more than 750 participants from over 50 countries.
Areas of focus
I bring extensive subject matter expertise across six broad areas listed below.
Media Innovation, Audiences, and Revenue
I help news and media organisations align content decisions more closely with editorial and business goals, and respond to changing audience behaviours and technological disruption. Projects can include audience growth and engagement strategies, editorial and product development, approaches to attract and retain subscribers and members, newsroom workflows, revenue diversification, and monetisation of products including podcasts and newsletters.
AI Adoption and Workflows
I help media and communication teams identify suitable AI use cases for research and newsgathering, writing and editing, images, video and audio, rapid multiplatform production, and other everyday workflows. My expertise includes reviewing existing workflows, helping teams choose and test tools safely, designing staff learning and experimentation programs, and developing practical guidance for responsible use.
Digital Storytelling and Content Production
I design and deliver hands-on training for organisations and individuals who need to create effective digital content to strengthen audience reach and engagement. This includes online and social-first storytelling, smartphone journalism, video, vertical video and creator-style first-person storytelling, podcasts and audio, writing for print, web and social platforms, and repurposing content for multiplatform distribution.
Training can focus solely on production skills, or combine these with audience strategy: choosing the right format and platform, adapting content for different audiences, improving team workflows, and using digital content to support wider editorial, communication or business goals.
Solutions and Constructive Journalism
I am an accredited trainer with the Solutions Journalism Network. I help media organisations and NGOs understand and apply solutions and constructive approaches to storytelling: explaining what is working and why, in an evidence-based and journalistically rigorous way. Training can range from introductory sessions to advanced programs that help participants use these approaches to support audience engagement, research uptake, social impact and revenue goals.
Social Impact and Research Communication
I help journalists, NGOs and researchers communicate complex information clearly to strengthen audience engagement and research impact. This can include communications strategy, identifying and understanding audiences, developing key messages, research translation, presentations and public speaking, media interview skills, and multiplatform content creation including social and digital content, video, podcasting and data visualisation.
Project topics have included science and public health, climate change, biodiversity, international development and other social-impact issues.
Media Development and Information Integrity
I am an accredited trainer for Thomson Reuters Foundation and BBC Media Action. I work with these and other media development agencies to design and deliver programs for journalists, news organisations and civil-society organisations, with a focus on emerging economy and fragile state contexts.
Projects can cover media literacy, verification and OSINT, misinformation and disinformation, elections, crisis and disaster reporting, newsroom development, digital skills and training-of-trainers.
I have extensive experience adapting programs to different countries and contexts, including working with local partners, translators and facilitators, and designing around differences in technology, resources, audience needs and media environments.
Tailored work
Much of my work starts with a problem rather than a predefined service.
